You do lots of different omega 3s, which one is right for me?

The myriad of health benefits to be gained from taking an Omega 3 supplement is well known – from their role in protecting our heart health and maintaining normal blood pressure, to supporting brain function and vision, joint mobility and skin health. While oily fish provide a great source of the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, increasing our intake is not always convenient, or desirable, plus with the concerns of environmental toxins and heavy metals in seafood – this is where a supplement can help.

Taking fish oil as a supplement will provide excellent levels of EPA and DHA. The oils are taken from small fish such as anchovies and sardines and are absolutely clean and stable, with no trace of ocean pollutants, heavy metals etc. While our fish oil capsules are quite large and therefore suitable for older children and adults, we also have a liquid fish oil with a pleasant lemon flavour, suitable from 6 months.

We also produce an omega 3 supplement from krill in which, unlike fish oil, EPA and DHA are carried into the cells in phospholipid form, so absorption is more efficient. Phospholipids transport nutrients directly into the cells and can cross the blood-brain barrier. They also serve as structural components of the cell membranes. One of the phospholipids in krill is phospatidylcholine: a phospholipid attached to a choline molecule. Choline is used in the synthesis of acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter important for brain and muscle tissue, important for foetal development and liver function.

Krill Oil also contains excellent levels of naturally occurring astaxanthin – a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrient that has been shown to support cardiovascular health, be protective for the brain and nervous system and help to prevent skin damage.

For vegetarians and vegans, we offer an omega 3 product derived from the marine algae Schizochhtrium sp. Microalgae which is grown in a controlled environment, eliminating the risk of oceanic contamination and providing a sustainable option to fish oil.

Algal oil is rich in DHA, which is essential for foetal and infant brain and vision development, so a great option for pregnancy and breastfeeding. These small capsules are suitable to take from 4 years, and we also offer a tasteless vegan omega 3 liquid which is suitable from 6 months – so a great option for all the family.

We also have a vegan omega supplement which provides an appropriate ratio of the omega-3 fatty acids, with omega 6 fatty acid GLA, from evening primrose oil. Some omega-6 fatty acids such as arachidonic acid (found in meat and dairy produce) can be pro-inflammatory in large amounts, but GLA demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties – and the combination of EPA and GLA has been shown offer more anti-inflammatory protection when taken together than EPA alone.

Prostaglandins, produced by GLA may regulate many body processes such as blood pressure, the reproductive cycle and the immune system. They are also important for skin health, oxygen metabolism and cell membrane integrity.

Finally, we have a powerful omega-3 and antioxidant formulation, which contains a vegan source of EPA and DHA alongside the protective plant antioxidants CoQ10, grapeseed oil, oregano oil, rosemary oil and astaxanthin.
